A Residual haunting, AKA a restligeist (German loan word) from restlich (residual) and Geist (ghost), is thought by some to be a replayed haunting in which no intelligent ghost, spirit, or other entity is directly involved. Much like a video tape, residual hauntings are playbacks of auditory, visual, olfactory, and other sensory phenomenon which are attributed to a traumatic event, life-altering event, or a common event of a person or place, like an echo of past events.

Alleged residual hauntings often center on moments of intense emotion: someone's beheading, a great battle, a murder, or even a celebration.Paranormal researchers theorize that residual hauntings are the result of discharged personal energy of a person or group of people being imprinted on the surrounding environment, most commonly at or just after death

Intelligent hauntings or human type of haunting are those in which the ghost interacts with the present. It is intelligent, in
that it may communicate with those on the earthly plane. The disembodied person has
elected for some reason to stay or maybe just visit the physical world, due to a connection
with a person, place or thing. Intelligent hauntings may also occur due to a spirit's
compelling need to deliver a message from the other side of the grave, or to watch over
loved ones. In addition, it is also plausible that intelligent hauntings occur due to
attachments the ghostly person feels through memories, trauma, tragedy or any other
emotional tie.

In these manifestations, the entity or entities encountered seem to possess human personalities and emotions,They may at times appear visually in human forms, and are responsive to changes in external conditions such as the activities of the occupants of a household, the presence of investigators, or the rearranging of furnishings in a setting, all of which suggest their formerly having existed as living, cognitive beings.

Demonic Hauntings (inhuman entities ) They are usually very easy to identify as long as they are not hiding. When it is a demonic haunting you typically notice a revolting stench similar to rotted flesh or sulfuric acid. They often let loose a growl that sounds like it is coming from everywhere at once. They like to make contact by pushing, shoving, hitting, and even scratching. The whole air in the affected area will feel thick like fog and the temperature will drastically change, typically becoming warmer.
