Mansfield Reformatory

In Mansfield Ohio, 80 miles from Cleveland lies Mansfield Reformatory. Its considered to be the most haunted prison in the country. From the outside, it resembles a Transylvania Castle. It was closed in 1990, and ever since then it has been open to the public for tours. It was a repository for America’s worst criminals while active.

There were about 2,500 prisoners held at a single time in the prison. One section of the prison alone holds nearly 1,200 cells, almost the size of a football field. The building was closed due to lawsuits related to inhumane treatment of the prisoners. It is believed the 150 prisoners that died in the prison now haunt these walls because of the horrible ways they were treated. One tragic tale took place in the 1950s, where the Warden’s wife was accidentally killed by a gunshot going off.

It is believed that her ghost still wanders the hall of the administrative building where she lived. In the basement, a figure of a young boy has been seen leaning down in the corner. People who visit the site feel an overwhelming sense of spirits, and its come no shock due to the horrible aura one gets while visiting any prison. And let’s just say these ghosts probably aren’t the friendliest ghosts you’ll ever meet due to the fact that they had miserable and unjustified deaths.
